Spain has a special place in my mind and my soul. I've spent chunks of two summers there, including a sort of marriage/honeymoon hybrid trip. I've lazed on beaches, wandered historic streets, lounged on terraces late into the night drinking cava and talking with friends, danced a weekend away at the Sonar Festival, and of course....I have eaten all manner of wonderful things there. Too many to list here. My memories have left me with so much fondness for Barcelona, Valencia, Sant Pol de Mar and other luxurious little nooks in this beautiful country that my heart aches a bit when I think about it. As much as I love my home city of Toronto, there is a part of me that certainly feels it belongs somewhere over there.
Spotlight City Events has just the antidote for my little problem. After a very successful inaugural trip down tapas lane last year, they have decided to bring Pinxtos Toronto back again this summer. I was lucky enough to get a little preview of the chefs, restaurants and flavours that will make up this years' homage to the style of eating I have come to know and love so well in Spain - and it is nothing short of fantastic. Extra bonus, this little sneak peek at Barsa Taberna featured a menu created by their current consulting chef, Chris McDonald - who very much sparked Toronto's interest when it comes to Spanish food. (Trust me, he was way ahead of the curve on this one). Here's a sampling of what I encountered:
All of this deliciousness set the stage perfectly for what looks like an incredible lineup for the event itself on August 23. Spotlight City Events has gathered up an impressive roster of culinary talent from Toronto, New York City and yes, even Spain to dazzle us with their take on the Pintxos theme. Take a look at this list of vendors:
- Barsa Taberna
- East Thirty-Six
- Salt Wine Bar
- Donostia (New York City)
- Simply Fosh (Mallorca, Spain)
Plus, because you will be thirsty, there will be an excellent and rather exclusive lineup of Spanish beer, wine, and cider available that you don't want to miss. This includes Barcelona's favourite beer Estrella Damm, plus two Basque country bevvies available in Toronto for the first time: Zapiain Sagardoa (cider) and Txomin Etxaniz (estate white wine).
