The (unofficial) end of summer has arrived Let's all take a moment to digest (mourn?) that fact.
On the upside, this is kind of the time of year when most of us look our best, no? That's definitely the case for me. In the cooler, drier months my skin can get red and rashy, my hair flat and prone to static. By the time we cruise through August, I feel comfortable in my own skin and hair thanks to a healthy dose of SPF-shielded sunshine and some humidity. (I don't care if other people hate it, I need it to function.) It's easy to coast on the effects of these kinder conditions, but post-Labour Day days really are a wonderful way to reset, reevaluate, and resume (or replace) routines. Here's a few suggestions for staying end-of-summer glow-y even if your days are no longer filled with #eatsleepbeachrepeat.
1) Get Blitzed
Yeah, you heard me. A little never hurt anyone. Maintenance, that is. Most of us have skin that needs a little tune up now and then, But it's not like you want to spend those precious last moments of summer inside with a mask on, or spend tons of money somewhere. So get yourself into Blitz Facial Bar for one of their speedy treatments. I went with the 30 minute Blitz + Glow facial ($48) , which includes the essentials: cleanse, exfoliate, mask, tone, argan serum massage and hydration, with an added Peel Me Away booster ($10) which is just the thing to start fresh for a new season. My esthetician Sarah was super gentle, suggested the right peel for my skin type and even took care of a pesky zit that had cropped up. Left feeling refreshed and looking far dewier than I walked in. Considering the price, the time spent, and the result....it's a no-brainer.
2) Protect Yourself....Naturally
While sweater weather is just around the corner, there's still some sizzle left in the atmosphere. Staying fresh and protecting your skin are still top of mind. Toronto-based Consonant Skincare has solutions to beat the heat without parabens, phthalates, sulphates and other irritants and toxic offenders. Their Dealkalizing Deodorant stops odour from happening by creating a less alkaline environment, so nasty bacteria can't thrive. The Perfect Sunscreen protects with an SPF 15 or 30, minus harsh chemicals, which is fantastic. But it also doesn't create that weird chalky, greasy finish that most natural sunscreens have, so there's no fear when using it on your face, or anywhere else.
3) Hair (is more) Apparent
All summer long, it's tempting (and easy) to sweep your hair into a pony or bun just to get it out of the way and keep cool. But with fall approaching, your locks are front and centre again. The condition of your hair is also even more important. I was recently reminding of the fact that Oribe makes what are pretty much the ne plus ultra of haircare products. You think you're hair obsessed? This line is named for, and created by Oribe Canales , who is as rockstar as you can get when it comes to hair stylists. His signature is sexy hair - just ask J Lo, Rihanna, Diana Ross, Agnyess Deyn....to name a few. The whole product line smells absolutely incredible, and works even better. Gold Lust shampoo & conditioner will tackle your damage in the most luxurious way possible. Take it from someone who is hair-challenged, this stuff is wonderful. Being on the fairer side, I'm extra excited for the new Bright Blonde shampoo, to help keep my tone in tune. (I fear the brassy bigtime). Oribe products are available at Donato salon + spa in the GTA, plus more stockists are available on their website.
And...even though it's been years, I still get that "back to school" haircut and colour just pre-Labour day, as a way of freshening up or changing it up for the approaching season. It just so happens that the man behind these blonde beachy waves (uhhhh totally not my natural texture, which is why he's magic) will soon be opening a new salon in Toronto that will, of course, carry Oribe as well. Watch this space for more details (and more gorgeous, undone waves on people with far more hair than I have.)
4) Don't Forget to Fuel
Alllllright so it's September and now it's your schedule that's heating up, right? Back to routine, back at it, TIFF, WMC Fashion Week on the way, back to school, you name it. It's all happening, and all at once. It's easy to get overwhelmed, over-scheduled and forget to take care of yourself. Not eating enough can equal energy crash and burn, and trying to put the wrong fuel in the tank with sugary eats can be even worse. Be prepared for by having some whole food snack options with you. Eat Nakd Raw Fruit and Nut Bars are portable, delicious, and contain only whole food ingredients.
Clocking in at just over 140 calories each, these bar wonders pack just enough of the energy you need to keep going between meals. Who could say no to flavours like Cashew Cookie and Cocoa Delight?
5) The Smell of Success
Headache, tension, or pain getting you down? There's more than one way to tackle those kind of nagging ailments that pop up when seasons change and things get busy. Saje Natural Wellness has a whole range of chemical and drug-free remedies to help get you back on track. Their Pocket Pharmacy contains five of their most popular roll-ons to help pick you up, including: Peppermint Halo, Stress Release, Pain Release, Immune, and Eater's Digest. I first stumbled upon this Canadian company when I lived in Calgary in 2007, and totally fell for their all-natural products that smell incredible. As of 2015, they now have 30 stores across Canada, including on Queen Street West in Toronto, plus everything is available online. So no need to stress, you can get the relief you need, wherever you may be.
